River Ganga

Ganga is not only a river but it is the soul of Indian culture and is considered as Goddess.The river originates at Gangotri glacier on the southern slopes of the Himalayas ,some 14,000 feet above the sea level.

River Ganga is about 157 miles long(2506 km).

 

The headwaters of the Ganges comprise many small streams of which the six longest and their five confluences are considered scared.

The six headstreams are Alaknanda,Dhauliganga,Nandakini,Pindar,Mandakini, andBhagirathi.

 

The river is home for more than 140 different species of fish and 90 different species of amphibians,many of which are near extinction today . Ganga is also the home for fresh water dolphins and Ganges sharks,both of which are endangered species with Ganges shark being critically endangered.

The mouth of River Ganga forms a vast Sunderban delta,which is the largest Delta in the world.The Ganga water has self cleaning properties due to the presence of bacteriophage virus.
